AT&T Service Options
This AT&T phone can handle high-speed data connectivity via AT&T's 3G mobile broadband data network, which is available in most major metropolitan areas. The AT&T 3G network uses the dual-band UMTS 850/1900 MHz network (also known as WCDMA), making it possible to enjoy a variety of feature-rich wireless multimedia services. It also gives AT&T the advantage of offering simultaneous voice and data services.

In areas where the 3G network is not available, you'll continue to receive service on the AT&T EDGE network, which offers availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways. Providing average data speeds between 75-135Kbps, it's fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services, including video and music clips, full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the go. You'll also enjoy quad-band GSM connectivity, which allows you to make calls in more than 190 countries and access data applications in the more than 135 countries where AT&T offers international data roaming.

With 3G connectivity, you'll be able to access AT&T's Video Share service, which enables you to send a live, one-way video stream to another compatible phone during a standard voice call. The service also allows you to switch the direction of the video stream during the same phone call. (Customers must be in an area served by the company's 3G network and have a Video Share-enabled phone.) A majority of users in the architecture, engineering and construction industries rated the ability to share live video through Video Share highly, according to research commissioned by AT&T. Video Share lets you see progress on a job site or review the day's work without having to drive from an office or other site to do so.

This 3G-enabled handset is compatible with AT&T's Video Share calling.
You can take advantage of the AT&T Navigator GPS software and service, a full-featured premium navigation application that includes audible turn-by-turn directions, real-time traffic updates and re-routing options, and 3D moving maps (additional charges applicable). AT&T Navigator offers several other features to make your commute more enjoyable and reliable, including mobile access to Yellowpages.com. Additionally, AT&T Navigator is the only mobile phone-based GPS service that provides integrated speech recognition for address entry and points of interest search.

With 3G connectivity, you'll be able to access AT&T's Cellular Video (CV) service and the Internet while on the go. Cellular Video features content from CNN, The Weather Channel, iFilm, Comedy Central and exclusive premium content from HBO and much more. And you get access to AT&T Mobile Music, which enables you to buy tracks while on the, access the Napster subscription music service, stream music video, discover what's playing with Music ID song-recognition software, and find out what's hot with The Buzz music news portal. (A MEdia Max subscription bundle is recommended for accessing AT&T's Internet, video, and music services.)

The phone has a built-in web browser for MEdia Net downloads and mobile web browsing. AT&T's MEdia Net service enables you to receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more.

Small business and enterprise customers also have the option to use AT&T's Enterprise Paging to connect quickly to its workforce from a central location. Enterprise Paging is an AT&T-hosted service that allows a centralized dispatch system administrator to build customized group distribution lists of workers in the field and to send group notifications via text messaging. Workers can respond immediately or take the appropriate action in the message.

With its built-in A-GPS, you can use the optional AT&T Navigator service to get you to your destination with points of interest and turn-by-turn navigation.

3 out of 5 stars Not so rugged after a year   July 29, 2010
Shaun J. Lindow (Orem, UT)
This phone can really take a beating, but does it slowly start to die like almost every other phone out there? The answer is yes.

I've had mine for a little less than a year, and the microphone is starting to die. I can bypass that by using a headset, but I'm surprised that a phone which can be run over by a Mack truck can't stand up against every day wear and tear. I never overly abused my phone (except of the first week I was throwing it against the wall to show off for my coworkers, and I may have talked with it in the shower a few times :P), but it does seem to be getting steadily harder for people to hear me on it.

In conclusion, if you need convincing that this phone is tough, just take a look at the numerous YouTube videos of people doing horrible things to the Rugby, but if you need it to keep working well after a year, look elsewhere.

Also, it's very heavy and bulky, but I suppose that goes with the teritory.

4 out of 5 stars RUGGED PHONE - BUT NEEDS THESE IMPROVEMENTS:   July 5, 2010
Robert L. King Jr. (Portland Maine)
owned and used it everyday since April 1,2010.

WATER RESISTANCE: It went UNDER the water that first night and although it took a few minutes......it did work after submerging and continues to work through this writing (July 5, 2010).

IMPACT RESISTANCE: It has been dropped and skidded across pavement and it works immediately upon picking it up.

BUILD WEAKNESSES: 1. The plexiglass window on the face is just that.......plexiglas......NOT GOOD ENOUGH if you advertise that it is built to MILITARY SPECS. HEY SAMSUNG!......this window should have been made out of a thin sheet of LEXAN. 2. The speaker face (screen on the face) has dented easily (not on the pavement incident) and the paint is chipping off this face. THOSE ARE THE ONLY TWO WEAKNESSES I SEE.

This is a rugged, large, man's phone.....not something pretty and petite. I wanted something that is built for a man and that is what I got. The speaker is loud enough to be heard within loud ambient-noise environments. Although the speaker could be clearer sometimes.

HEY SAMSUNG!!!.....here is my advice to you: Spend the extra for the transparent face by making it of LEXAN (bullet-proof glass), make the speaker face (the perforated panel) out of dark-stained stainless steel.......and lastly......IMPROVE THE QUALITY (LET US SAY.....FIDELITY) OF THE SPEAKER SOUND.

THAT IS IT! THIS IS A RUGGED, LOUD, MAN'S PHONE. It could become very popular for an outdoor person's use..........but Samsung needs to listen and improve. I like it.

5 out of 5 stars Great 4 the outdoorsman....as long as it is not winter   May 13, 2010
Kristin Mcglothen
I purchased two of these phones. One for me and one for my husband. I haven't had a single issue with mine. We live in the Pacific Northwest and it gets a lot of rain time. Like other reviewers, the PTT option is annoying and it is rather bulky. I don't mind since I have had mine for just over a year and haven't needed to replace it. My husband on the other hand, has had issues with the battery not working in the extreme (20 degree) winter we just had. It seems to not want to turn on and automatically turned off if it is cold. We had to warm the unit (set by fire, or under legs) in order for it to work. I am impressed that it went through the washing machine, sat in a bag of rice for four days and works for the most part. He doesn't have use of the right-side buttons on the unit, but since he doesn't turn it off or actually dial with it, that is not an issue. I will probably purchase him a replacement when time comes and pass this one down to my daughter until her plan allows for a rugby replacement for her destroyed (non-rugby) phone. I would recommend this phone to anyone buying phones for minors.

1 out of 5 stars Lousy software   May 6, 2010
Jeffrey Abbott Savage (Urbana, IL USA)
I bought this phone because I tend to be hard on my cell phone. It did make it through my two year contract, but it is easily the most irritating phone that I've ever owned. The reception is terrible, texting is awkward, and the interface is not intuitive. Buy a more fragile phone with insurance.

3 out of 5 stars Works, but I have a crack after 1 week.   May 4, 2010
Daniel Pires
I received the phone very quickly after the online order. Activation online was a breeze as well. No complains about service or software so far: reception is good (as it always been), ok to use and easy to operate.
However I have a crack on the front display after one week. This happened when I crouched down to pick something up and heard the crack.
I also have an iPhone 3GS since it's launch, it's been almost a year and the iPhone's giant screen (by comparison) is still intact. I do have a screen protector on the iPhone but isn't the Rugby supposed to withstand these sort of things. I must say however, the screen and the phone still work though and that's why I couldn't go lower on the star rating.
I'm making this review before calling AT&T and/or Samsung, I'm not sure what the warranty will cover but I do recall reading "Shock Resistant."
